Compare eBook Readers

Thanks to the advances of science, we are now able to read out favorite books, newspapers, and magazines in an electronic format. The ebook reader allows one to download and read written text in the digital format. Not only does this help to save the environment, it also helps us to save us money.

A number of such readers are available in the market and those who are interested in purchasing the same should first compare ebook readers before purchasing them. This article attempts to compare readers in brief since it is not possible to cover all the different features of various such readers that are available.

Before we go ahead to compare ebook readers it might be worth mentioning that Sony is credited with launching the first such reader. That version did not have wireless facilities that are common in most current generation ebook readers.

Amazon Kindle 2

Weighing a mere 10.2 oz and having dimensions of 8" x 5.3" and just 0.36" thick, this ebook reader boasts of wireless connectivity through CDMA/EVDO. One can also transfer digital books from their PC using this USB 2.0 provided. The screen size of this reader is 6” with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. Though it boasts of a keyboard and a MP3 player, it does not have a touch screen. It has 2 Gb memory which is sufficient to store the equivalent of 1500 books.

Amazon Kindle DX

At 18.9 oz, this new offering from Amazon weighs a bit more but provides a bigger 9.7” screen with a higher resolution of 1200 x 824 pixels. Merely 0.02” thicker than the Kindle 2, the outer dimensions of this reader is 10.4" x 7.2". This ebook also provides wireless connectivity. Be prepared for blazing fast downloads due to its 3G connectivity. EVDO connectivity is also there. Connectivity with the PC is through the USB 2.0 port. Unfortunately, this too lacks touch screen features though is has a keyboard and a MP3 player.

Sony PRS-700

This ebook reader from Sony is both slimmer in size from its Kindle cousins and also weighs less. At 10 oz, it is also the lightest. Boasting of dimensions of 5.1" x 6.8" this gadget has a slim factor of 0.4”. Unfortunately it does not have wireless capabilities (this problem has been addressed in the version from Sony) and files have to be first downloaded to the PC and then transferred to this ebook reader through its USB 2.0 port. The screen size is 6” and boasts of resolutions of 800 x 600 pixels. Surprisingly, this beauty has touchscreen capabilities. It also features a MP3 player, though it lacks a keyboard. The memory too is quite low and is just 512 Mb
